How DolyaCut calculates quilt yardage

Every length is in whole eighths of an inch, so there are no rounding surprises. Worked example: Lantern Path, Baby. It has 4 × 5 Lantern blocks (8" finished), 2" sashing between and around the blocks, a 4" border, 2½" binding and a usable width (WOF) of 40".

  1. Quilt size.
  2. Strips for each cut. Strips = ⌈pieces ÷ ⌊WOF ÷ subcut⌋⌉.
  3. Border chain, sides first.
  4. Binding.
  5. Yardage. Add the raw strip inches, add the extra once, then round up to ⅛ yd (4½").
  6. Backing, with a 4" overhang: 58" × 68".

There is no industry-standard allowance. DolyaCut prints whichever policy you choose under every table, so the people using your pattern know what is included. These figures come from the designer's own cut list. They do not certify that a block goes together. Always test-cut.
